Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teacher- This full-time position is for a system-wide Deaf Education Teacher. This position will require traveling to local schools within the system (all schools are within 5 miles of each other) to work with and serve hearing impaired students. Most work will be in a consultative and co-teaching environment in the regular education classroom. Applicants must either hold  or be eligible for a GAPSC certificate in Deaf Education (Field 797). Experience and knowledge of IEP implementation and documentation and co-teaching models preferred. Start date July 29, 2022.

JOB GOAL:  To teach assigned students those skills, concepts, attitudes, and abilities as directed in adopted curriculum, and to perform other duties ancillary to the teaching role to include student safety, control, welfare, and growth.

REPORTS TO:  Principal and Special Education Director

 

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid Georgia teaching certificate required in appropriate field.
  2. Ability to relate well to individuals, groups of students, and parents.
  3. Willingness to travel between the local schools in the system in order to serve hearing impaired children.
  4. Physical demands - position requires significant standing and some sitting, kneeling, and walking.  Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling will not normally exceed thirty (30) pounds, and will usually be in the area of ten (10) pounds.  Must be able to move about the classroom and monitor student behavior.

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Works within the framework of the goals established by the Berrien County Public Schools.
  2. Plan the long and short range objectives for each assigned course.
  3. Provide accommodation allowing hearing impaired students access to the general curriculum.
  4. Collect and use a wide variety of information to aid in guiding the growth and development of individual pupils.
  5. Select meaningful subject matter and related learning experiences appropriate to various stages of pupil development.
  6. Select and utilize appropriate teaching procedures.
  7. Proficient in the use of sign language.
  8. Arrange and schedule annual audiologicals. 
  9. Knowledgeable of set up and use of infra-red sound fields and FM Systems.
  10. Establish standards for individual pupils in terms of ability level.
  11. Create a classroom climate conducive to pupil intellectual, social, emotional, and moral development.
  12. Control student behavior and activities so that they contribute positively to the accomplishment of goals,
  13. Utilize concept formation, principles, and generalization in helping students to understand subject matter.
  14. Evaluate student performance continuously to determine the extent of direction needed to attain goals.
  15. Perform duties associated with special education students such as:
  16. Assisting in development of IEPs for students;
  17. Participating in IEP conferences, placement conferences or parent conferences concerning students;
  18. Observing students in regular classrooms who are being reviewed for possible special education services;
  19. Reviewing with classroom teacher the special education students' needs and progress.
  20. Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and staff development opportunities.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Position works 190 days.

EVALUATION:  Performance is evaluated in accordance with the personnel policy and certified evaluations.
