BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach works under the direct supervision of the athletic director and the principal. The coach is expected to provide the necessary leadership and to plan, organize, and be responsible for a comprehensive interscholastic basketball program, and to carry out the objectives of the total school athletic program. The coach is also responsible for the junior varsity and freshmen level programs; as well as, contact with the middle school program.  Varsity level coaches are expected to have had previous successful varsity coaching experience and experience in playing the sport at the collegiate or high school level. Qualified candidates should possess strong communication, organizational, motivational, teaching, and coaching skills. This person should be a person of high character and values that will set a positive example for all students at Berrien County High School.  The candidate for this position should hold a GA teaching certificate or be eligible to be granted a teaching certificate.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

·         Receives direct supervision from the athletic director, and/or the principal.

·         Exercises direct supervision over assigned assistant coaches and student assistants.

·        
ESSENTIAL OR REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Demonstrate proper sportsmanship and respect for players, officials, opponents, fans, and other coaches.
2. Maintain good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, etc.
3. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
4. Serve as a positive role model for students, coaching staff, and the community.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high school athletes.
6. Ability to motivate student athletes to participate and sustain their interests in the program.
7. Work effectively with student athletes of varying abilities, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
8. Secure from all participants, prior to the start of pre-season, the following: proof of physical and parental permission forms.
9. Previous successful basketball coaching experience at the varsity level within the previous four years.
10. Collegiate level playing experience in this sport is highly desirable with high school level playing experience expected as a minimum requirement.
11. Direct the training, conditioning and performance of the varsity athletic team and to lead, supervise and assist the assistant coaches in their efforts with teams assigned to them.
12. Assume responsibility for inventory, selection and care of equipment.
13. Responsible for the condition of athletic facilities and needs for their preparation and maintenance.
14. Responsible for the supervision of all students under their care.
15. Report injuries to administration in a timely manner. Ensure that a coach will accompany any injured player who requires medical attention.

16. Work with JV coaches and/or assistants in order to promote progressive learning of athletic techniques, fundamentals and systems of play; attend all staff meetings called by the athletic director.
17. Build and sustain a successful program that garners both financial and community support and is respected by the Berrien County School System and community at large.
18. Availability to coach during summers and vacation periods; some evening and weekend work will be required.

19. Assist the athletic director and principal in the hiring, and/or retention of assistant coaches.

20. To work cooperatively with the athletic director to assure proper insurance coverage for all athletes.

21. To ensure that all players are properly and safely equipped for their sport.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:
1. Inform parents and student/athletes regarding NCAA Clearinghouse registration deadlines and academic requirements, etc.
2. Encourage athletes to take PSAT, SAT, and ACT in order to prepare for college.
3. Assist the athletic director in developing game schedules, practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and the program budget.
4. Requisition supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
5. Provide game results to the media; keep season and game-by-game statistics and records; provide statistical reports to the athletic director as needed and/or requested.
6. Provide statistical information, video, etc. to college recruiters upon request.
7. Submit upon request varsity letters and present at awards banquet.
8. Stay abreast of students' academic eligibility, work with teachers and administration to help keep students eligible and file eligibility reports to GHSA in a timely manner.
9. Apply discipline in a positive, firm and consistent manner according to district policy.

10. Adhere to all protocols listed in the athletic handbook.
10. Other duties as assigned by the principal or athletic director.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Must have successfully coached the sport at the high school or collegiate level within the last four years. Head varsity basketball coaching with boys and/or girls experience is highly desirable.
Certification: CPR/First Aid Certification is preferred.
Clearance: Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance is required.
References: Must have at least three positive references from previous coaching experiences and positive letter(s) of recommendation from athletic director and administration.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out essential job functions:

1. This work involves standing for long periods of time and may involve walking or standing for extended periods of time.
2. Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, manual dexterity to operate sports related equipment, and handles and works with various materials/objects.
3. Able to work in a wide variety of temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors; including extreme high temperature conditions outdoors.

4. Ability to demonstrate actions you want athletes to perform.
